Furniture is usually a focal point in a room because it gives a significant impact to the room decor once it is added. However, furniture may look old after used overtime. Usually people will replace the old furniture with a new one, but this is sometimes not necessary because simply painting your furniture you can make it look new. Painting wood furniture is a simple and cheap way to reface your furniture in a brand new look without having to buy a new one. Before painting wood furniture, remember that not all kinds of furniture can be refaced by painting.
Some furniture pieces are antique. Painting those kinds of furniture can destroy the value of the furniture. So, make sure that you furniture is an antique piece before painting. When you work, choose a well-ventilated place without nothing around that may produce flames or sparks for painting. Remove the hardware and place your furniture on a layer of newspaper or a disposable drop cloth. Sand your furniture with sandpaper or liquid sander until smooth. Sand it two or three times using 100-grit and 150-grit sandpaper may be required. In order to do this, you have to wear gloves, safety gloves and a dust mask. Use a hand vacuum, brush or a tack cloth to remove any residual sawdust, avoiding make the wood wet.
Apply a coat of gray spray-on or white brush-on primer depending on the size of the piece of furniture you want to cover before painting. Allow it to dry for 2 or 3 hours or follow the recommended time from the primer's manufacturer. Apply a second coat of primer if it looks spotty. The last, apply a coat of water-based paint with a brush on even strokes in the direction of the wood grain. Apply two coats if paint with each coat should dry overnight. Painting wood furniture is not a difficult job. So, you can do it yourself paint your wood furniture to give a brand new look to your old furniture.
