Knockdown is a technique that is used to texture drywall. It is done by spraying or spreading texturing compound onto the surface, and then flattening it with a drywall knife. There are various methods of knock down ceiling and the least difficult is to spray texture on with a manual sprayer and flatten it with a wide drywall knife. It creates a random pattern of blotches that helps mask minor defects in the drywall. Here are some steps you can follow to knock down your drywall.
Prepare the area and yourself before working, cover the floor with a drop cloth and wear protective clothing, eyewear and headgear while spraying texture onto the ceiling. You can produce a pourable, thicker solution by mixing powdered wall texture or drywall joint compound with water. Fill the mixture in a canister. Knock down ceiling can be started by pointing the sprayer at the ceiling about 2 feet away. Pump the sprayer handle and keep the nozzle moving while texture is emitted. Make sure to get the texture on the entire ceiling so that the ceiling should be covered with a random array of rounded blotches 1 inch from each other when you are finished. Climb a ladder to knock down the texture using an 8-inch to 12-inch drywall knife. Scrape the blade over the texture in the same direction to produce a uniform effect or change directions if you want a more random effect. Creating a swirl effect is also easy by arcing the blade while scraping. Clean off the blade frequently to prevent the excess texture rub off on the ceiling or drop on the floor. Let it dry and sand lightly with a pole sander and 120-grit sandpaper. Finally, prime it drywall primer and paint the ceiling.
Those are some steps of knock down ceiling that you can easily do to create a beautiful texture on your ceiling.
